GRIFFISS INTERNATIONAL SCULPTURE GARDENTransforming a 3,500 acre former Air Force Base into the vibrant business and technology park it is today takes a Master Plan with dynamic vision. Since 1995, the Park has aligned closely with its’ vision to develop its’ seven zones. To date we have welcomed over 65 businesses and over 5800 employees to the Park. An enhancement of the natural beauty in the Park—rolling hills, meadows, trees, water, is the addition of public art. Fall 2008 welcomed nine leased or commissioned sculptures to the Park. Sculpture Garden was conceived by Griffiss Local Development Corporation (GLDC) as part of the Master Plan for Park development. In 2007, Sculpture Space, an international artists’ residency program based in Utica, NY dedicated to the creation and presentation of contemporary art, partnered with us to spearhead the project. For phase one, the work of nine international sculptors were selected thanks to a dedicated steering committee consisting of community members, park tenants, and staff. The siting for the sculptures involved artist input and the talented work of Sasaki, an international renowned, landscape architecture firm. The City of Rome and Griffiss Utility Services Corporation (GUSC) provide the lighting for each piece. Griffiss Land Owners Association (GLOA) and GLDC will provide ongoing care for Sculpture Park. This is only the beginning! It is our intention and vision to expand public art throughout the Park. Over the next ten years, planned development will expand the scope of the collection, locations, and vision for public art in Griffiss Business and Technology Park.
